FAQ

 FABRIC CARE QUESTIONS
How do I use Otter Wax Fabric Dressing?

Our Fabric Dressing can be used on factory-waxed, factory-oiled, natural, and untreated fabrics.

First, you’ll want to make sure that your item is clean. Make sure that if your item is already waxed or oiled that you follow proper care instructions (this usually involves washing with ice water and a sponge).

Next, open the tin of wax and simmer it in a pot of water over a stove, until the wax is thoroughly melted.

Once melted, you’ll want to use a rag (an old t-shirt works well) to work the melted wax into the fabric. Pay special attention to seams and pockets, as these are usually the first areas to have lost some of their water-proofing capabilities.

Make sure you’re only waxing parts of the fabric that will not come in contact with your skin. Waxed and oiled fabrics that come into contact with your skin feel cold and clammy.

Once your item has been treated with Fabric Dressing you’ll need to let it ‘cure’. Just hang the item up and use the blow dryer to smooth out any wax that might look uneven. This will also give a slight sheen to your item. Let it hang overnight in a warm, dry area to allow the wax to set.

What’s the difference between the bar of Otter Wax and the Fabric Dressing?

The Regular and Extra Large bar of Otter Wax is ideal for items with a single layer or thin layers of fabric. The wax spreads evenly into the upper layer of the fabric, without completely saturating the fabric. This method is best if you want to wax your denim, canvas sneakers, hats, etc. Treating factory-waxed and factory-oiled garments with the bars is a quick and easy way to add an extra layer of protection and reinvigorate past wax and oil treatments.

The Fabric Dressing is best suited for factory-waxed and factory-oiled items that need a thorough re-proofing. The Fabric Dressing is melted before application, so it will penetrate deeper into the fabric, which is why it is best suited for thick fabrics and multi-layered items (usually outdoor coats and jackets).

What is the shelf life of Otter Wax products?

Our products should be in good quality condition for 3 years. We recommend that our products are used within 12 months after opening since they are natural products. This includes keeping them out of extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Any difference in texture or consistency of one of our products is often associated with it being a natural product. If you are unsure if your product is still of good quality, please contact us and provide further information on the product consistency, smell and texture.

Are your products safe for pets?

Here at Otter Wax, we are passionately agains animal testing. We have never tested our products on animals, and our products are not meant for consumption. All of our products are made from natural ingredients, but if you have concerns about using a product or if you have a pet that has ingested a product, please contact your veterinarian.

I am allergic to bees. Can I still use your products?

Most allergic reactions to bees are the result of a sting. We do not use actual bee venom in any of our products – only bee by products such as beeswax and honey. However, if you are allergic to bee by products, then we do not suggest using our products. We recommend that you contact your doctor to find out which products are best for you.

How are Otter Wax products different from other “natural” products?

The term “natural” is used very loosely today, especially about care products. Many companies use the fat of slaughtered animals (ex: Mink Oil, Neatsfoot Oil) and petroleum-based ingredients, like mineral oil, chemical additives and preservatives, but still call their products “natural”. Otter Wax is different. We do not use any animal fats, fillers, petroleum distillates, mineral oil or chemical preservatives.

I read that harvesting beeswax is not cruelty-free. How does Otter Wax obtain their beeswax?

Rest assured, all beeswax used here at Otter Wax is harvested cruelty-free. Our beeswax undergoes rigorous certification to ensure the cultivation process protects the bees’ normal production cycle. The bees first produce a wax honeycomb where they can store their honey. The honeycomb then is capped off and the bees move on to build another big hive. When full, the bees are moved to a new location to start all over again, ensuring the normal cycle of nature.

How much Otter Wax do I need?

There are a variety of things that factor into how much wax a certain fabric will require. For example: Factory oiled tincloth is already saturated with oils, so it will absorb much less wax, while a medium-weight, untreated canvas will absorb more.

As a general rule, it’s always better to have some wax left over from a project than run out halfway through. We’ve developed the following guide to help you choose the size that’s right for you.

 LEATHER CARE QUESTIONS
What is Mink Oil? Do your products contain it?

We have never, and will never use Mink Oil in any of our products.

The mink is a small animal whose oil is generally used as a waterproofing agent and leather aid to increase softening and flexibility. Mink Oil comes from the thick layer of fat that minks have beneath their fur; this fat is removed when the mink is skinned. The fur is used for coats and accessories and the fat is processed into mink oil. Its production is considered cruel by PETA.

The conditioning and softening properties of Mink Oil are derived from Linoleic Acid, which accounts for only 16% of the oils’ composition. In comparison, Walnut Oil is comprised of 59.6% Linoleic Acid. This is why we choose to fortify our Leather Oil and Leather Salve with all-natural Walnut Oil.

What is Neatsfoot Oil? Do your products contain it?

Our products do not contain Neatsfoot oil. Otter Wax products are made from natural plant-based ingredients and humanely harvested beeswax and lanolin without sacrificing product effectiveness.

Neatsfoot oil is used as a conditioning and softening agent for leather. Neatsfoot oil is a yellowish oil rendered from the boiled shin bones and feet of cattle. Modern neatsfoot oil is still made from cattle, but is now usually made mostly from lard and sold as pure neatsfoot oil.

Is lanolin a natural ingredient?

Yes, lanolin is considered a natural ingredient. Lanolin is a waxy, natural oil secreted from sheep’s wool that is gathered from the wool after the sheep are sheared. The lanolin is extracted by squeezing the wool between rollers. Then, it is then filtered to remove any solid material. We use lanolin in some of our products because it is an exceptional natural moisturizer and water repellent. It also has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to protect extend shelf life of the product.

Can you use your Fabric Wax on leather?

Yes, you can use our Heavy Duty Fabric Wax on both smooth and sueded leather. The wax will give a shiny finish along with a waterproof seal. Treat as often as necessary to maintain the water repellency. Before applying, be sure to test on a discreet area to ensure that you’ll be satisfied with the results.

 GENERAL QUESTIONS
Are your products vegan?
