LEATHER OIL
ALL-NATURAL SAFFLOWER & VITAMIN-EPOLISHING OIL
Handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, our Conditioning Leather Oil is a fast-soaking, all-natural leather conditioner for routine upkeep. A few drops on a cloth, a quick buff, and dry leather comes back to life — softer, glowing, and good as new.
Perfect for conditioning leather sofas, couches, chairs, leather car seats, boots, jackets, bags, purses, belts, and gloves. A great everyday treatment that pairs beautifully with our Leather Salve — moisturizer after a deep-conditioning treatment.
We use simple, natural ingredients because the stuff we care for is the stuff we live with. Your favorite boots, jacket, bag, or briefcase isn’t just another thing in the closet. It carries your story, breaks in with you, and gets better with age.
Unlike a lot of the other fabric and leather care products you'll find out there, Otter Wax products will never include ingredients such as petroleum byproducts, artificial fragrances, PFAS, PTFE, paraffin, chemical preservatives, or rendered animal fats.
No mink oil. No neatsfoot oil. No ingredients that require killing an animal — ever. We use all-natural beeswax, lanolin, and plant-based oils because they perform and because we can stand behind every ingredient on the label.

HOW TO APPLY
Otter Wax Leather Oil is formulated to replenish moisture and keep leather flexible without relying on harsh chemicals. Many conventional leather oils can feel greasy, over-soften leather, or contain petroleum-based ingredients that may weaken fibers over time. Our Leather Oil uses natural oils to absorb into the leather, restore suppleness, and help maintain a smooth, healthy luster with regular use.

STEP 1
Wipe leather clean with a soft cloth or brush to remove any dust or debris before applying.

STEP 2
Shake the bottle, and apply a few drops to a clean, lint-free cloth — a little goes a long way.

STEP 3
Rub the oil into the leather in small circular motions, working one section at a time for even coverage.

PRO TIP
Let the leather absorb for 15–30 minutes, then buff with a horsehair brush for a soft, healthy finish.
Always test Otter Wax Leather Oil on a small, discreet area first — and on most leathers, expect a temporary darkening that settles into a richer tone as the oil absorbs.
FAQ
Think of Leather Oil as your everyday moisturizer and Leather Salve as your deep-conditioning mask. The Salve is a thicker beeswax-based balm that protects, softens, and adds water resistance — perfect for boots, jackets, and anything that takes a beating. Leather Oil is lighter, soaks in faster, and is built for routine upkeep, color refresh, and gentle softening. Most people use our Leather Salve once or twice a year and use our Leather Oil monthly. They work beautifully together — Salve first, Oil to moisturize and refresh.
Sometimes, but it's temporary and it's completely normal. Pretty much any type of oil-based treatment will always darken the tone of leather as it settles into a richer, healthier-looking version of the original color over 24–48 hours. Lighter leathers (cream, tan, natural) show the most temporary darkening; while deeper browns and blacks can barely change at all. We always recommend testing on a small, discreet spot first, like an inside edge or seam, the back of a belt, under bottom of a cushion so there are no surprises.
Conditioning Leather Oil is safe for any smooth, finished leather: full-grain, top-grain, aniline, semi-aniline, bridle, latigo, and most pull-up leathers used in furniture, footwear, bags, belts, gloves, and car interiors. Skip it on suede, nubuck, and roughout (use a brush and our Suede Cleaner & Conditioner instead), patent leather (the sealed finish blocks absorption), and faux or vegan leather (it's plastic, not leather — nothing for the oil to bond to).
It depends on the item and how hard it works. A daily-carry leather bag or pair of boots in regular rotation benefits from a light conditioning every 4–6 weeks. A leather sofa in a sunlit living room is happy with quarterly treatment. Seasonal gear or items in storage can usually go 6 months or more. The rule of thumb: if your leather looks dry, dull, or thirsty, it's time. If you can smell the leather but can't see any sheen, definitely time.
Yes. Conditioning Leather Oil is made from food-grade safflower oil, vitamin E, and a small amount of sweet orange essential oil — no harsh chemicals, no PFAS, no synthetic fragrances, no preservatives. We still recommend letting the leather absorb fully (15–30 minutes) and buffing off any excess before letting little hands or paws back on the couch, but there's nothing in this formula that we wouldn't want in our own homes. And we have a lot of leather in our own homes.
Generally speaking, you can apply Otter Wax leather care products over existing conditioners or protectants without any issues. If the leather has previously been treated with another conditioning product, it’s usually perfectly fine to apply our products directly on top.
If you’re unsure what was used on the leather in the past, we’d recommend starting with our Saddle Soap to clean the surface and remove any excess buildup before applying a conditioner or protectant. Just make sure the leather is allowed to dry completely first.
The main exception would be if the leather has been treated with a synthetic coating or sealant, such as a polyurethane finish or other plastic-like barrier. Those types of coatings can prevent natural oils and waxes from absorbing properly into the leather. In that case, the coating would need to be removed before using Otter Wax products, and our leather care line may not be the best fit until that’s addressed.
When in doubt, a quick cleaning with Saddle Soap and a small spot test in a hidden area is always the safest approach.
