FABRIC CARE FAQ
Waxing fabric changes both the look and feel, giving it a richer color, a slightly stiffer hand, and a water-resistant finish. The exact appearance depends on the fabric’s weave, thickness, and color—waxing usually darkens the material and can create a subtle sheen or a more rugged, weathered texture.
To see real-life results on different types of canvas, check out our Waxed Canvas Swatch Sample Library. It’s a great way to preview how your project might turn out before you start waxing.
To see examples of how various canvas fabrics will appear once they have been waxed, be sure to check out the Waxed Canvas Swatch Sample Library.
We recommend letting freshly waxed items cure for 24 to 72 hours in a warm, dry place before putting them to use. Cooler temps, high humidity, or heavier applications of wax can all extend the curing time. You’ll know it’s ready when the surface no longer feels tacky.
For best results, start with a light coat—you can always add more later. Taking the time to let the wax fully set will ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish.
It depends on the type of smell. A light cedar or waxy scent is totally normal right after waxing—that’s from our natural ingredients like cedarwood oil, which has antimicrobial properties and acts as a shelf stabilizing preservative for our waxes. This scent fades gradually as the wax cures over several days or weeks.
If the odor smells more like body odor and shows up after extended wear, it’s likely from moisture and bacteria getting trapped inside the fabric (waxed canvas is water-resistant, but also less breathable). To fix this, we recommend spraying the inside of the item with our Botanical Enzyme Odor Eliminator. It uses natural enzymes to break down odor-causing bacteria and freshens with peppermint essential oil—all without affecting your waxed finish. Use as often as needed.
Our Fabric Wax and Fabric Dressing can be used on most fabrics, but they work best on natural fibers like cotton, hemp, and canvas. Because our formulas are made from all-natural ingredients, they bond especially well with untreated, breathable fabrics.
They can also be used on blended fabrics, as long as natural fibers make up the majority of the weave. While you can apply wax to synthetics like nylon or polyester, the results may vary—wax tends to sit on the surface and may flake or wear off more quickly.
For the most durable and water-resistant finish, we recommend sticking with high natural fiber content.
You can certainly apply either our Fabric Dressing or Wax Bars to nylon, polyester, or polyblend fabrics, but keep in mind they work best on natural fibers (cotton, hemp, jute). With synthetics you’ll often see pilling or flaking as the wax doesn’t really “soak in” and less durable water resistance, especially in high-flex areas.
If you’re set on waxing a synthetic or polyblended fabric, here’s how to get the most out of it:
- Test a small patch first to see how it bonds.
- Apply thinly—a light coat will adhere more consistently than a thick layer.
- Heat-set gently (hairdryer or low-heat iron) to help it grip.
- Reapply periodically if you notice wear or flaking.
Regardless of what type of fabric you plan on waxing, we always recommend testing our waxes on a small discrete location to ensure desired results will be achieved and following manufacturer care instructions.
Waxed fabrics provide great protection from the elements, but they’re not considered highly breathable. The wax creates a barrier that locks out moisture—and also traps it in—so it’s important to care for waxed items properly.
First, be sure to let your item fully cure for 24–72 hours in a warm, dry space after waxing. This helps the wax set properly and minimizes tackiness, which can otherwise lead to trapped moisture and odor over time.
To keep your item fresh, hang it regularly in a well-ventilated area and use our Botanical Enzyme Odor Eliminator on the interior as needed. It breaks down odor-causing bacteria without affecting the wax finish—naturally, of course.
Yes—but expect some changes. Waxing will darken the fabric’s color and add a subtle sheen. It may also create a distressed or varied appearance, especially on fabrics with texture or uneven dye. This is a normal part of the waxing process and gives each item a unique, weathered look.
We always recommend testing the wax on a small, hidden area first to make sure you like the finish before treating a larger section.

No. All Otter Wax products are completely free of petroleum, paraffin, and other synthetic by-products. Unlike many conventional waxes that rely on petrochemicals, we use only natural ingredients like beeswax, plant-based oils, and essential oils.
Nature has provided effective, sustainable solutions for centuries—and it’s our mission to bring those time-tested alternatives back into everyday use. Choosing Otter Wax means choosing a cleaner, healthier option for both you and the environment.
Our Fabric Wax and Fabric Dressing are semi-permanent treatments designed to bond with fabric and last over time. In general, we recommend a full reapplication once a year to maintain optimal water resistance.
That said, high-wear areas—like jacket hoods, cuffs, or the knees of pants—may need a quick touch-up more frequently. A light re-waxing in those spots will keep your gear performing its best while preserving its natural, rugged character.
Waxed fabrics naturally resist dirt and water, but regular upkeep helps them last even longer. To clean your item:
- Use a natural bristle brush to gently remove dust and debris. This also helps smooth out creases in high-wear areas.
- For odor control, spray the unwaxed side with our Botanical Enzyme Odor Eliminator. It targets bacteria that can build up inside waxed gear—without affecting the wax coating.
- If you need to remove dirt or stains, spot-clean only using our Waxed Canvas Spot Cleaner. Cleaning will strip the wax from that area, so once dry, just reapply a light coat of wax and allow it to cure for 24–48 hours before use.
Avoid machine washing or submerging in water, as this will break down the wax and compromise the finish.
We generally don’t recommend fully washing waxed items, as it can strip the wax and reduce performance. For most situations, spot-cleaning is best.
To Spot Clean:
Mix about 2 tablespoons of our Waxed Canvas Spot Cleaner into 12 oz of warm water. Use a soft-bristle brush or rag to gently scrub the stained area. Let it dry completely, then reapply wax as needed and allow it to cure for 24–48 hours.
Full Garmet Cleaning (If Necessary):
Fill a large bucket with cold water and add 4 tablespoons of our Spot Cleaner. Turn the item inside out and submerge it. Gently scrub the interior using a brush or rag. Do not twist or wring the fabric—just let excess water drip off. Hang the item (still inside out) in a warm, dry place to air dry completely. For shoes or bags, stuffing them with paper towels or newspaper can help speed drying. Once dry, reapply wax to any areas that need it.
Keep it cool, gentle, and natural—and your gear will stay adventure-ready for years.
Waxing your fabric will make it highly water-resistant, not completely waterproof. Our all-natural wax creates a durable barrier that repels rain, snow, and splashes—perfect for daily wear and moderate exposure to the elements. However, it won’t make your item fully impervious to water in extreme conditions or long-term saturation. We believe in performance that’s rooted in nature—not plastic coatings—so you get protection without compromising breathability or sustainability.
Technically yes, but it’s usually not necessary—and often not ideal. Waxing both sides of a fabric can make it feel stiff and less breathable, especially for garments. We recommend waxing only the exterior to create a strong barrier while maintaining comfort and airflow inside. For items like bags or tents where a double coat might make sense, go for it—but for clothing, a single side is usually best. It’s all about balance: long-lasting protection without overdoing it.
Our waxes are safe to use on natural fibers and won’t shrink or stretch your fabric on their own. However, applying heat (especially on delicate or untreated fabric) may cause slight tightening due to the nature of natural fibers. This effect is minimal and usually resolves with wear. For best results, apply wax evenly and test a small area first. We design our products to work with the fabric—not against it—so you maintain the integrity of your gear while adding lasting protection.
We don’t recommend using an iron on waxed fabric. The heat can soften and displace the wax, and worse, it can transfer residue onto your iron. If your fabric needs smoothing, gently warm the surface using a hair dryer or heat gun and shape by hand or with a flat object. Our waxes are designed to respond well to low, controlled heat—just be careful not to overdo it. Think of it like skincare for your fabric: gentle heat, natural ingredients, and a little patience go a long way.
If you need to remove wax, gently warm the area and blot with a clean cloth or paper towel to lift it away. You can also use our Waxed Canvas Spot Cleaner to help break down and remove the wax from specific areas. Just remember: removing wax also removes the water-repellent barrier, so you’ll need to reapply if you want continued protection. Our products are made to last, but we also understand the value of flexibility—whether you’re reworking a project or refreshing a piece for a new season.
Dyeing after waxing isn’t recommended. Our wax creates a hydrophobic barrier that repels water—and dye, too. If you plan to dye your fabric, do it before waxing to ensure full saturation and even coloration. Once dyed and dried, apply our Fabric Wax or Fabric Dressing for a lasting finish that enhances both color and protection. We always aim to help customers get the most from their materials, without relying on harsh chemicals or synthetic shortcuts.
Store waxed items in a cool, dry, and breathable place. Avoid sealed plastic bags or airtight containers, which can trap moisture and lead to mildew or musty odors. Instead, use a cotton garment bag or hang your item in a closet with good airflow. Proper storage helps preserve both the wax finish and the integrity of your item—naturally extending its life without the need for synthetic preservatives or additives.
Yes, waxing indoors is safe—especially since our products are made with all-natural, biodegradable ingredients and no harsh chemicals. That said, we recommend working in a well-ventilated space, as natural oils and waxes (like beeswax and cedarwood) have a distinct scent during application. Lay down a drop cloth to protect your workspace, and use tools like a heat gun or hair dryer to set the wax if needed. Clean application, clean ingredients, and a cleaner conscience—that’s the Otter Wax way.
LEATHER CARE FAQ
Not at all. You don’t need to use every product at once, and there’s no single order that works for every piece of leather. Each product serves a specific purpose—cleaners remove dirt, conditioners restore moisture, and protectants shield against the elements.
Some projects only call for one or two steps, while others might benefit from the full routine. The key is knowing what your leather needs and when to give it a little extra care.
For a closer look at how to get the best results, visit our Smart Leather Care Guide.
It depends on how often the item is used and the environment it’s exposed to. For items used regularly—like boots, bags, or jackets—conditioning every 3 to 6 months is a good rule of thumb. If the leather feels dry, starts to lose its luster, or shows signs of cracking, it’s time to reapply.
You may notice a slight darkening when the product is first applied—this is normal. It’s simply the natural oils being absorbed into the leather. The color typically settles as the leather cures, and this darkening is usually temporary. Always test on a small, hidden area first if you’re unsure.
We don’t recommend it. Bonded and faux leather are made with synthetic materials that don’t absorb natural oils and waxes the way real leather does. Our products are formulated specifically for full-grain and top-grain leather, where they can deeply penetrate and provide long-lasting results.
Leather Salve is a rich, wax-based conditioner that deeply restores and protects leather, making it ideal for dry or worn-out pieces. Leather Oil is lighter and better suited for quick touch-ups or regular maintenance. Both can be used together—oil first for moisture, salve second for sealing and protection. The more often your leather is treated with our Leather Oil, the less often it will require the more intensive treatment provided by our Leather Salve.
Yes. Dirt, dust, and buildup can block conditioners from properly absorbing into the leather. For best results, start with our Saddle Soap to remove surface grime, then follow with Leather Oil or Leather Salve to nourish and protect. Clean leather always responds better to care.
Yes, this is completely normal. What you’re seeing is just the natural waxes in the Leather Salve beginning to cure on the surface of the leather. This hazy or slightly waxy finish means the product is doing its job—conditioning and protecting your leather.
To fix it, simply buff the surface with a clean, dry cloth. A bit of friction helps warm up the wax and smooth it into the leather, leaving behind a clean, even finish with a soft sheen. If the haze persists, you can lightly warm the surface with a hairdryer on low heat, then buff again.
Yes. While our wax-based products are naturally self-preserving, we generally recommend using Otter Wax leather care products within two years of purchase. Because we use only biodegradable, all-natural ingredients, these formulas are designed to break down over time—just not while they’re on your leather.
To get the best performance, store products in a cool, dry place and avoid extreme temperatures. A little care in storage goes a long way in keeping your products fresh and effective.
No—absolutely no otters are harmed or involved in the making of our products. Despite the name, Otter Wax does not contain any ingredients derived from otters (or any other wild animals, for that matter).
The only animal-derived ingredients we use are beeswax and lanolin, both of which are sustainably and humanely harvested without causing harm. We chose the name Otter Wax because it evokes the natural water-resistance and rugged resilience that our products deliver—not because of what’s inside the tin.
Mink oil is a by-product made from the fat of minks—animals often raised and slaughtered on industrial farms, primarily in China. While it’s traditionally used in leather care for its conditioning properties (thanks to its high content of palmitoleic acid), it’s often blended with petroleum-based additives to reduce cost and extend shelf life.
At Otter Wax, we believe there’s a better way. Our Leather Salve and Leather Oil offer the same rich conditioning benefits, but with palmitoleic acid sourced exclusively from plants—no animal by-products, no petroleum, and no compromises. It’s all part of our commitment to sustainable, cruelty-free leather care you can feel good about using.
Neatsfoot oil is a yellowish oil traditionally made by rendering the shin bones and feet of cattle. It’s commonly used in leather care but is often blended with petroleum by-products to extend shelf life and reduce production costs.
At Otter Wax, we don’t use neatsfoot oil in any of our products. Instead, we rely on plant-based oils and natural waxes that offer the same deep-conditioning benefits—without the use of animal by-products or synthetic additives. Our commitment is to create effective, environmentally responsible products that align with the values of conscious craftsmanship.
Yes! All Otter Wax leather care products are free of dyes and synthetic colorants, making them safe to use on all types and colors of leather. Whether your leather is black, brown, tan, or brightly dyed, our formulas will nourish and protect without altering the original color.
That said, it’s perfectly normal to see temporary darkening as the natural oils and waxes are absorbed. This is just part of the conditioning process, and as the leather cures, its tone will gradually return to a more natural finish. Always test on a small, hidden area first if you’re unsure.
For regular maintenance, we recommend starting simple: vacuum any dust or debris from the creases, wipe the surface with a warm, damp cloth, and apply our Leather Oil to condition and protect. It’s an easy way to keep your sofa looking rich and feeling soft.
If your sofa is especially dirty or dried out, start with our Saddle Soap to gently lift dirt and grime, followed by Leather Salve to deeply condition and restore moisture. Once it’s cleaned and rehydrated, use Leather Oil regularly to maintain its health and appearance.

Yes. Boot Wax can be used to condition and protect leather soles, helping to extend their lifespan and resist moisture. Just be aware that freshly conditioned soles may feel slicker than dry leather, so use caution the first time you wear them after application. Letting the wax fully absorb and cure before wearing is always a good idea.
Not at all. Despite the name, Boot Wax isn’t just for boots. It’s formulated to condition and protect all kinds of smooth leather—shoes, bags, jackets, saddles, tool belts, and more. It’s especially useful for leather that sees regular exposure to the elements, offering water resistance and a durable finish. As long as the leather is smooth and doesn’t have a suede or nubuck finish, Boot Wax is a great choice.
Our traditional leather care products—like Leather Salve, Oil, and Boot Wax—are designed for smooth, full-grain leather and should not be used on suede or nubuck. These types of leather have a soft, raised nap that can become matted or stained when treated with oils or waxes.
For suede and nubuck, we recommend using our Conditioning Suede & Nubuck Cleaner. It’s specially formulated to lift dirt and revive texture without darkening or damaging the surface. It cleans gently, conditions naturally, and helps maintain that velvety finish. Don't forget to add a set of utility brushes to help revive the nap after using this treatment.
Yes—if the straps are made of leather, our products will work well to clean, condition, and protect them. Just be sure to avoid applying any product to the cork footbed or sole, as those materials won’t absorb the wax or oils properly. Stick to treating the leather parts, and your sandals will stay looking their best.
We use all-natural orange peel oil in our leather care products—not just because it smells great, but because it’s a natural preservative with antimicrobial properties that help extend shelf life. Most people enjoy the mild, citrusy scent, but if you’re sensitive to citrus oils, we recommend applying the product in a well-ventilated area. Once applied, any noticeable scent typically fades within a few days.
