LEATHER SALVE
ALL-NATURAL CARNAUBA & SHEA BUTTERCONDITIONING TREATMENT
Otter Wax Leather Salve is our deep conditioning balm made from an exceptionally nourishing blend of shea butter, carnauba wax, and natural citrus oils. It softens and revives dry, dehydrated leather and helps prevent dry cracks which can lead to tearing.
Use Leather Salve to condition dry leather furniture, couches, boots, purses, handbags, jackets, shoes, saddles, and gloves. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, work into the leather, let absorb, then buff. Re-condition every few months.
We use simple, natural ingredients because the stuff we care for is the stuff we live with. Your favorite boots, jacket, bag, or briefcase isn’t just another thing in the closet. It carries your story, breaks in with you, and gets better with age.
Unlike a lot of the other fabric and leather care products you'll find out there, Otter Wax products will never include ingredients such as petroleum byproducts, artificial fragrances, PFAS, PTFE, paraffin, chemical preservatives, or rendered animal fats.
No mink oil. No neatsfoot oil. No ingredients that require killing an animal — ever. We use all-natural beeswax, lanolin, and plant-based oils because they perform and because we can stand behind every ingredient on the label.

FAQ
Leather Salve is a thicker, wax-based conditioner that penetrates deeply — best for leather that's dry, stiff, or aged. Leather Oil is lighter and absorbs faster, making it better for regular maintenance. They work well together: oil first to moisturize, then salve to seal in protection.
Sometimes, but it's temporary and it's completely normal. Pretty much any type of oil-based treatment will always darken the tone of leather as it settles into a richer, healthier-looking version of the original color over 24–48 hours. Lighter leathers (cream, tan, natural) show the most temporary darkening; while deeper browns and blacks can barely change at all. We always recommend testing on a small, discreet spot first, like an inside edge or seam, the back of a belt, under bottom of a cushion so there are no surprises.
No. Leather Salve is best when used for smooth, full-grain leather. The waxes and oils will mat the soft nap on suede or nubuck and can leave staining. For those finishes, use Otter Wax Conditioning Suede & Nubuck Cleaner instead — it's formulated to clean and revive the texture without flattening it.
For best results, apply Leather Salve to a clean leather surface. Dirt and grime can block the leather from absorbing the treatment properly. We recommend cleaning first with Otter Wax Saddle Soap, allowing the leather to dry completely, then applying Leather Salve. Clean leather generally conditions better and holds the treatment longer.
That said, use your best judgment when cleaning. Over-cleaning can sometimes fade vibrant colors. If the item is only lightly dusty from storage, a quick wipe with a soft damp cloth may be all it needs.
That cloudy haze is totally normal! The natural waxes are simply curing on the surface as the salve sets. Buff the leather with a clean, dry cloth and the haze should smooth out into a soft sheen. If any haze remains, gently warm the surface with a hair dryer on low heat, then buff again. When buffed, that haze is what helps create a protective barrier helpful for repelling water and stains.
Yes. Leather Salve works well on leather sofas, armchairs, and other furniture — especially pieces that feel dry or look faded. For light dirt, clean with Saddle Soap first. For ongoing maintenance between deeper treatments, our Leather Oil is a lighter option that's easy to apply more frequently.
Generally speaking, you can apply Otter Wax leather care products over existing conditioners or protectants without any issues. If the leather has previously been treated with another conditioning product, it’s usually perfectly fine to apply our products directly on top.
If you’re unsure what was used on the leather in the past, we’d recommend starting with our Saddle Soap to clean the surface and remove any excess buildup before applying a conditioner or protectant. Just make sure the leather is allowed to dry completely first.
The main exception would be if the leather has been treated with a synthetic coating or sealant, such as a polyurethane finish or other plastic-like barrier. Those types of coatings can prevent natural oils and waxes from absorbing properly into the leather. In that case, the coating would need to be removed before using Otter Wax products, and our leather care line may not be the best fit until that’s addressed.
When in doubt, a quick cleaning with Saddle Soap and a small spot test in a hidden area is always the safest approach.
