Leather gets dirty. Saddle soap fixes that without the harsh detergents, synthetic dyes, or petroleum-based ingredients that strip leather of its natural oils. Otter Wax Saddle Soap is a leather cleaner and conditioner in one step, built from a proprietary blend of natural beeswax, castile soap, and essential oils. It lifts surface dirt and deep-set grime while softly conditioning the leather, leaving the surface primed and ready for conditioning with our Leather Salve or Leather Oil. SADDLE SOAP
ALL-NATURAL BEESWAX & CASTILE SOAP LEATHER CLEANER
Built on a time-tested formula of beeswax, castile soap, and essential oils. Otter Wax Saddle Soap cleans grime out of the grain and leaves enough natural conditioning to keep leather soft. PFAS-free, petroleum-free, handmade in Portland, OR.
Use on smooth leather boots, shoes, belts, wallets, purses, handbags, leather jackets, saddles, equestrian tack, leather furniture, sofas, car seats, baseball gloves, and work gloves. Not for suede or nubuck. Test a small hidden area first.
We use simple, natural ingredients because the stuff we care for is the stuff we live with. Your favorite boots, jacket, bag, or briefcase isn’t just another thing in the closet. It carries your story, breaks in with you, and gets better with age.
Unlike a lot of the other fabric and leather care products you'll find out there, Otter Wax products will never include ingredients such as petroleum byproducts, artificial fragrances, PFAS, PTFE, paraffin, chemical preservatives, or rendered animal fats.
No mink oil. No neatsfoot oil. No ingredients that require killing an animal — ever. We use all-natural beeswax, lanolin, and plant-based oils because they perform and because we can stand behind every ingredient on the label.

HOW TO APPLY
Our Saddle Soap is designed to clean and condition leather at the same time. Unlike many traditional leather soaps that use harsh detergents and can leave leather dry, stiff, or prone to cracking, our formula gently lifts away dirt, mud, and buildup while helping restore moisture and maintain the leather’s natural flexibility.

STEP 1
Dip a soft-bristle brush in water, then work it into the soap until a rich foam forms.

STEP 2
Apply to leather in small circles. The lather lifts dirt as it works. Rinse and repeat.

STEP 3
Wipe the lather off with a damp cloth. Let the leather dry completely before conditioning.

PRO TIP
Follow up with Otter Wax Leather Salve once dry to lock in moisture and seal the surface.
Remember to always test Otter Wax Saddle Soap on a small, discreet spot prior to treating your entire item to ensure desired results.
FAQ
It can, and that's the point. Most leather cleaners are built around detergents that strip the hide and leave it dry, which is why a separate conditioner is usually required to put oils back in. Otter Wax Saddle Soap is built differently. The castile soap lifts dirt and grime out of the grain while the natural beeswax and essential oils leave behind enough conditioning to keep the leather soft and supple. For everyday cleanup that's all you need. For deep restoration on dry or weathered leather, follow up with Otter Wax Leather Salve or Leather Oil once the hide has dried completely.
Yes, it works on finished leather furniture, couches, sofas, and chairs, including most pigmented and aniline-finished hides. The all-natural formula cleans without the harsh detergents that can dull or crack a finish over time. Test a small hidden area first, like the back of a cushion or an underside panel, to confirm the leather reacts the way you want. Use a soft-bristle brush or a damp cloth, work in small sections, and wipe the lather away before it dries. For heavily worn furniture, plan on a second pass and a conditioning treatment with Leather Salve to restore softness.
Cleaning any leather can temporarily darken it while it's wet, and the color usually returns once the hide dries out. Because Otter Wax Saddle Soap contains no synthetic dyes and no petroleum, it does not stain or tint the leather on its own. That said, every hide is different. Heavily worn, sun-faded, or untreated leather can react in ways finished leather will not. The fix is simple: test a small hidden area first, let it dry completely, and check the result before you commit to the rest of the boot, bag, or piece of furniture. If the test spot looks good, you're clear to keep going.
Yes, but be advised that using a wax based soap on leather with knap may require additional steps to revive the knap after treatment. Generally speaking, Saddle soap is built for smooth, finished leather and will mat down the nap on suede or nubuck, leaving permanent dark spots and a flattened texture you cannot reverse. Suede and nubuck need their own routine: a dedicated suede brush to lift the nap, a suede eraser for scuffs, and a specialty suede cleaner for set-in stains. If you have a pair of waxed suede boots or a coated nubuck item, those finishes change the rules slightly.
For most leather goods, a full saddle soap cleaning two to four times a year is plenty. Daily-wear boots, work gloves, baseball gloves, and bags that pick up real grime can use a cleaning every couple of months. Furniture and seasonal pieces are usually fine once or twice a year. The cue to clean is visible buildup, dullness, or dirt worked into the grain, not a calendar. Between deep cleans, a quick wipe with a damp cloth handles surface dust. After every cleaning, let the leather dry completely and follow with Otter Wax Leather Salve or Leather Oil to restore moisture and protection.
Two things. First, the ingredients. Most leather cleaners on the shelf rely on synthetic surfactants, petroleum-based conditioners, and added fragrance to do the work. Otter Wax Saddle Soap is built around natural beeswax, castile soap, and essential oils. PFAS-free. Petroleum-free. No artificial dyes. Second, the formula does two jobs at once. The castile soap pulls dirt out of the grain while the beeswax and oils leave enough conditioning behind that most leather goods don't need an immediate follow-up step. Each tin is hand-poured in small batches in Portland, Oregon. It's a cleaner alternative that respects the hide.
Generally speaking, you can apply Otter Wax leather care products over existing conditioners or protectants without any issues. If the leather has previously been treated with another conditioning product, it’s usually perfectly fine to apply our products directly on top.
If you’re unsure what was used on the leather in the past, we’d recommend starting with our Saddle Soap to clean the surface and remove any excess buildup before applying a conditioner or protectant. Just make sure the leather is allowed to dry completely first.
The main exception would be if the leather has been treated with a synthetic coating or sealant, such as a polyurethane finish or other plastic-like barrier. Those types of coatings can prevent natural oils and waxes from absorbing properly into the leather. In that case, the coating would need to be removed before using Otter Wax products, and our leather care line may not be the best fit until that’s addressed.
When in doubt, a quick cleaning with Saddle Soap and a small spot test in a hidden area is always the safest approach.
